Off the Beaton Track
Off The Beaton Track is the first album by daughter and mother, Emma and Joyce Beaton . It features 13 tracks of music from the celtic tradition (Scottish, Irish, Appalachian, Swedish, French-Canadian), primarily on fiddle and cello, but with the addition of guitar, banjo, mandolin, and bazouki on several tracks, from guest performers who include, Robin Bullock and Steve Baughman, and Peter Gilmore and Tim Brown.
 There is also a featured vocal of the original version of Auld LAng Syne, with acclaimed Scottish duo, The Cast. This album is sure to delight all lovers of celtic music. 50% proceeds from the sale of this album will be donated to the BC Cancer Foundation.

Mother and daughter duo Joyce and Emma Beaton have released their debut CD "Off the Beaton Track".
I was delighted to see this release after reviewing Celtic Chaos', "Chaos In The Kitchen" CD a few months ago.
I was very fortunate to have a brief interview with Joyce and Emma prior to them going on stage at the Duncan Garage Show Room.
Joyce explained that a large portion of the sales from the CD will go to the BC Cancer Foundation. Emma & Joyce have the honor of performing at the upcoming BC Cancer Foundation Major Donor Celebration.
I ask Joyce how she felt about the recording. She explained that she had a limited budget for this recording and that some of the tracks where recorded in their living room. This would explain the relaxed feel of the performance. Scott Litlejohn, of BC Recording did an exceptional job of capturing this energetic performance.
My favorite track off the CD has to be "Hard Dang It, Hard". Emma explained that the actual name of the song is Hard Ain't It Hard. This track features Emma on Cello and Banjo. Emma uses a flailing claw hammer technique that gave the song a very percussive sound. I hope to hear more from these two ladies in the future.
You can catch their performance at their CD release of "Off The Beaton Track" Sept. 24th (fundraiser for cancer research) at the Oceanside Community Arts Council, in Parksville.
Emma and Joyce will also be performing Oct. 6th at the Dancing Bean in Chemainus. Make sure you catch their show. You wont be disappointed.

Off the Beaton Track: Music from the Celtic Tradition
The Qualicum, British Columbia, mother and daughter team of Joyce and Emma Beaton has just released their second CD entitled Off The Beaton Track. This album is a collection of their favourite tunes all from the Celtic tradition.
The Beaton’s have also just returned from Scotland where no doubt they were busy soaking up more of the Celtic traditional music to add to their repertoire.
In 2004, Joyce and Emma were also part of a another Celtic group called Celtic Chaos and they released an album under that name. When the Beatons record a CD there are also a lot of other people who benefit from the sale of their music.
For instance, the group Celtic Chaos raised over $10,000 for cancer research from the proceeds of their CD sale and 50 percent of the sales from Off The Beaton Track will also go to cancer research, with the other half toward a better cello for Emma.
Tracks on the album are: Thirty Years; Boys of the Lough; P.E.I. Jigs; Hard Dang It. Hard; Les Gros Danseuis; En Timme I Ungein; Heio; Breton Dance; Ora Lee; Strathpeys; I’m Too Sexy for My Djembe; Drakskeppet and Auld Lang Syne. The liner notes on the CD also have a background of each of the tracks.
Off The Beaton Track is instrumental of reflective Celtic listening music that at times has the sounds of East coast kitchen music. The only singing on the album is on Auld Lang Syne, which is beautifully sung by Mairi Campbell.
